Steven Kuypers graduated from the College for Creative Studies in 2009 with a BFA focused in sculpture and metals.  He currently runs Fortress Studios, a Detroit residency and studio space that provides facilities to emerging artists. The shops provide him a platform to advocate for both traditional skills and digital fabrication technologies.

Kuypers’ studio practice takes him through pages of classifieds, auction liquidations, and scrap yards looking for obsolete, neglected, and forgotten solutions to yesterday’s problems. He assembles these found artifacts into sculptural objects allowing their patina to speak of our collective history. New purpose is attained when recontextualizing the artifacts to comment on our current condition.
